MUMBAI: The new lockdown in the satellite towns has turned out to be more stringent than the nationwide shutdown in March. As Navi Mumbai geared for the fresh lockdown from Saturday, check points were installed at key locations to prevent movement of people. In other municipal corporation areas such as Kalyan-Dombivli and Panvel, too, cops cracked down on vehicles and people found on the roads without a valid reason.

Thane saw the highest Covid cases (420) and deaths (17) reported in a day on Friday taking the tally to 9,950 cases and virus toll to 350. Kalyan-Dombivli also saw a record singleday high of 564 cases. The total has touched 8,049 with 130 deaths (three on Friday). Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation recorded 257 cases and eight deaths on Friday, taking the tally to 7,345. Mira-Bhayander saw a record case count of 276, pushing the tally to 3,609. Three deaths on Friday have increased the toll to 149.
Authorities denied rumours of a lockdown in Vasai-Virar. The region recorded 305 cases taking the total to 5,515. With five deaths on Friday, the toll is 124. Panvel, which is also going under lockdown on Saturday, added 186 cases, putting the total at 2,578.
