THANE: Day-2 of the city-wide lockdown witnessed lockdown compliance was strictly being followed by residents as very few people were seen stepping out of their homes.
Even as the police had initially allowed Jambhli vegetable traders to operate maintaining social distancing till 11am daily, the municipal authorities forced it shut on Friday morning.
A few illegal hawkers did brisk business in the vicinity, alleged some vendors.
“We ordered vegetables from Pune and Nashik but the corporation denied us permission to operate. Even as we were refused to operate, few unregistered vendors were blatantly operating illegally till dawn at the Talao Pali section," complained a vegetable trader.
The corporation informed they received complaints of safety norms not being followed at Jambhli market. "We are taking action on vendors operating illegally in the city since Thursday. Our anti-encroachment teams swooped down on 127 vendors operating in the city and destroyed their wares," informed an official.
Meanwhile, several shops and utilities in the city, including those at Manpada, Uthalsar, Vartak Nagar and Pawar Nagar preferred to stay shut following confusion over operating timing as traders cited no staff turnout and low business as many residents had stocked up earlier.
Meanwhile, the Thane corporation has started issuing e-passes on https://covidthane.org/ or via email on digithane.contact@thanecity.gov.in. "Those wanting to travel within or beyond the city can apply citing relevant justification for travel and details following which we will issue them permissions," informed an official.
