LUCKNOW: Five policemen were suspended after a suspect of theft was found hanging inside the lock-up at Gomtinagar Vistar police station on Friday morning.
Police said the suspect, Umesh, ended his life by hanging himself from an iron rod inside the lock-up using his belt.
DCP east Somen Barma said the police have recommended a judicial probe in the incident.

"Injuries on Umesh's head appear to be self-inflicted and can only be confirmed by a threadbare probe," he said.
After directions of acting commissioner of police Sanjay Singhal for action against erring cops, sub-inspector Kaushalendra, constable Radha Mohan Singh, constable Deepak Khatana and constable sentry Raj and acting SHO Brijesh Yadav have been suspended.
Late in the evening, inspector Akhilesh Kumar Pandey was appointed as SHO Gomtinagar Vistar police station. The deceased, 24, was from Maholi in Sitapur district. According to the police, he was spotted entering an under-construction house and held hostage by the complainant. He complained to police and Umesh was brought to the police station thereafter around 5am on Friday. Around 6am, a sentry spotted Umesh hanging.
The cops had ignored the protocol of having the suspect hand over his belt before entering the lock-up.
Singhal said, "As per NHRC guidelines, a medical board has been constituted for conducting postmortem examination. We are awaiting the Covid-19 report of Umesh and thereafter will get autopsy done," he said.
