Intense lockdown extended in Madurai
Madurai
MADURAI: Tamil Nadu chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday announced extension of intense lockdown in Madurai till midnight of July 12.
An order issued in this effect stated that the intense lockdown, that is in effect in Madurai district since June 24 and was to end on July 5 – has led to a reduction in the number of Covid-19 cases. But some more time is needed to bring the disease under control in the district.
Hence the chief minister ordered extension of the existing intense lockdown under the Disaster Management Act of 2005.
The intense lockdown would be in force in the entire area covered by the Madurai Corporation, Paravai town panchayat, Madurai East, Madurai West and Thiruparankundram blocks.
No activity would be permitted in containment zones, which would be closely monitored by authorities. The local body administration should ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities to contained zones and isolated houses.
The chief minister said all the measures being taken by the government to control the spread of the disease would fail if people did not extend their cooperation. People should wear masks while going out and wash their hands regularly with soap and water.
Social distancing should be maintained in public places. People should avoid going out without reason, the statement added.
