MUMBAI: A retired professor from Mira Road became a victim of cyber fraud after her bank account was used to make multiple purchases in the wee hours of July 1.
Vijaylakshmi Nair’s State Bank of India (SBI) Thrissur branch, Kerala, debit card was intact. She does not remember using it in the recent past. She did not receive OTP for any of the 21 transactions made between 2.30am and 12.12pm when she learnt about the fraud after reading sms alerts on her cellphone.
Nair who was quick to deactivate the account told TOI that the bank informed her that the thief could have hacked into her account and tampered with the ‘Enable High Security’ to ‘NO’ that allows users to transact upto Rs 10,000 per day without OTP.

Nair said that in her case while the thief ensured that each purchase was below Rs 5,000, he managed to steal Rs 62,300 by transacting without OTP on a single day.
Four transactions done by the unknown thief had failed for want of OTP. Unfortunately, the OTP on a transaction made by the thief was asked after he/she had already made two purchases on the same account.
The SBI vigilance department has so far confirmed 11 disputed transactions using her account.
The victim sat down and contacted all the merchandise where the fraudulent purchases were made. Two of the merchandise have refunded her Rs 4,545.
Nair lodged a complaint with the National and Mumbai cyber cells. The case has been transferred to the Mira Road cyber cell.
