NEW DELHI: A Nigerian national was on Saturday arrested for allegedly duping a man of around Rs 45 lakh on the pretext of selling him herbal seeds for medicinal purposes.
Police said that Okeleve Frankline Chibundom (32) posed as the executive officer of a pharmaceutical company based in Tokyo and approached a man on a social media platform for procuring 10,000 packets of herbal seeds.
Chibundom has a diploma in computer science and created several fake websites to back his claims.
A man had approached police in February, saying that Chibundom had reached out to him on November 29. "The accused also gave him the number of a woman who identified herself as Arti Mukherjee. Mukherjee claimed to be the sales manager of a mining group in West Bengal, which was also recommended by the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo. Mukherjee told the target to transfer Rs 44,25,000 in different bank accounts, which he did. However, he never received the seeds or his money," said a police officer.
During investigation, the IP address of the fake website was traced to south Delhi's Mehrauli area. The accused, who was residing there, was arrested. Police said that Chibundom's live in partner, Gayatri Deori, posed as Mukherjee and is absconding at present.
