The Royal Bengal tiger, Kadamba, died due to heart failure
HYDERABAD: An eleven-year-old Bengal tiger died at the Nehru Zoological Park, making it the second tiger to die of ill health in the last 10 days.
According to the zoo authorities, the male Royal Bengal tiger named Kadamba died around 9.20 pm on Friday. As per the postmortem, the cause of death was shock due to congestive heart failure. "The tiger did not show any apparent signs of illness, but was off feed frequently, for the last few days.
Following which, he was kept under observation of the zoo veterinarians," said zoo curator N Kshitija.
The zoo officials further informed that all required blood and tissue samples were collected and sent to College of Veterinary Science in Rajendranagar, Veterinary Biological Research Institute (VBRI) in Shantinagar and LaCONES-CCMB in Attapur for further detailed examination and the results of these reports are expected in a week.
Born in 2009, Kadamba was brought to Nehru Zoological Park from Pilukula Biological Park in Mangalore on March 6, 2014. It may be recalled that a year after it was brought to the zoo, in 2015, Kadamba gave anxious moments to the zoo officials and visitors by escaping from its enclosure after scaling a 10 feet high fence.
However, zoo officials, who were in charge at that time, maintained that the tiger escaped from the 'summer home', a space for breeding animals and that it was a prohibited area for visitors. The tiger was tranquilised almost an hour after it escaped from the summer home and was then moved back into the enclosure.
With the passing away of Kadamba, the zoo currently has 11 Royal Bengal tigers (yellow) out of which eight are adults and three cubs.
Out of the eight adult tigers, three tigers, Roja, 21, Soni, 20, and Aparna, 19, have already surpassed their average lifespan, the officials informed.
On June 25, Kiran, a male white tiger died due to neoplastic tumour. Kiran was 8 years old.
