MUMBAI: A retired professor from Mira Road lost Rs 62,300 to cyber fraud, after her account was used to make 21 fraudulent purchases on July 1.
Vijaylakshmi Nair had not used her State Bank of India (SBI) debit card in the recent past, and did not receive any OTPs for the 21 transactions that took place between 2.30am and 12.12pm on July1. She learnt about the fraud on seeing transaction alert SMSs.
Nair immediately deactivated her account.
Nair told TOI that her bank said the fraudster had hacked into her account and tampered with the ‘Enable High Security’ option, which allows account holders to transact amounts up to Rs 10,000 without an OTP. So far, SBI confirmed 11 disputed transactions on her account. She lodged a complaint with national and city cyber cells.
