Karnataka: Two villages lock horns over woman’s burial
KOLAR: Residents of two villages in Bangarpet taluk on Sunday argued over the burial of a woman next to her husband’s grave. As the confrontation dragged on for over three hours, taluk officials intervened and brought about a compromise.
The 65-year-old woman from Kadirenahalli had passed away on Sunday. As her husband had been laid to rest in the cemetery of the neighbouring Attigirikoppa a few years ago, Kadirenahalli villagers brought her body to bury it next to her husband’s grave.
However, Attigirikoppa villagers raised an objection to this and demanded that Kadirenahalli residents take back the body and bury it in their village cemetery.
Kadirenahalli villagers tried hard to convince Attigirikoppa residents that as per Hindu customs, the wife’s body is laid next to her husband’s grave. But both the sides dug their heels in. When tempers flared, Bangarpet tahsildar K Chandramouleswara rushed to the spot.
Chandramouleswara told TOI as per Hindu tradition, a woman is laid to rest next to her husband. He convinced Attigirikoppa villagers about this and they agreed to let the woman be buried there. Chandramouleswara added he would convene a meeting of elders from both villages to diffuse the tension between the residents.
