Arteta: We have to win every game

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insists his side are entering the defining part of the season ahead of their crucial match against Leicester tonight.

The Gunners - who have matches against Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City over the next fortnight - have won four on the bounce and still face an outside chance of securing a Champions League spot.

Photo: GettyArteta said: “We know how important these games are going to be for the future of the season, so we are very focused and committed to trying to do as well as we can.

“We are on a good run, we’ve got some momentum and we’re getting to the crucial point of the season where we’re going to face the top teams in the next two weeks and we’re just trying to get prepared as well as we can.

“I think we have to win every game and then wait and pray. It’s not about winning one game. We need to go game by game.

“A few weeks ago, we were really far from even thinking about Europe and now we are a little bit closer at the moment. So let’s go game by game and see where it takes us.”

Arteta wants long-term Ceballos stay

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insists he wants the "important" Dani Ceballos to stay beyond the end of the season.

The midfielder - who signed on loan from Real Madrid last summer - has flourished since the restart after a difficult start to life in London.

Ceballos' loan deal is due to expire at the end of the season, with a number of Spanish clubs on alert.

But when asked if he would like to keep Ceballos at Arsenal, Arteta replied: “Yeah, we are talking to the club, obviously we don’t own the player.

“He’s not in our hands so the clubs will need to have a communication and see what we can do.

“I’m really happy with him, the way he’s evolving and I love how much he likes to play football – the passion he puts into every training session, and in every game, you just have to see his celebrations.

“Whether he’s on the pitch or on the bench, the way he celebrates shows how much he puts in and he throws his life into it.

“And again I’m really happy with him, I think he’s evolving in the right way and he’s becoming a really important player for us.”

Martinez feels 'safe' behind Luiz and Mustafi

Emi Martinez insists he feels "really safe" with defenders David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi in front of him

The Arsenal 'keeper is set for a string of games with first-choice Bernd Leno sidelined with a knee injury.

The Gunners have won four on the bounce with Martinez in net, keeping three clean sheets.

And while the defensive pair of Mustafi and Luiz have come under some criticism this season, Martinez is certainly happy.

"Now, we have structure, we have a gameplan, we have game management and the defence looks stronger and stronger," Martinez told Sky Sports.

"Believe me, David and Musti are top players. David has been at the top for so many years and it's the same with Musti.

"Sometimes when you make mistakes at big clubs you get punished. With Arsenal, people always seem to blame the defence for defeats. But I feel really safe behind them.

"They have experience and they are constantly talking through the whole game. When you play behind them, it's not like what people say. It's not, 'Oh, they make mistakes, they don't know how to play football'.

"I feel really safe, and now that we've kept three clean sheets on the bounce in the Premier League, people are starting to say that the defence is actually solid."

Saliba may yet play in Coupe de France final for Saint-Etienne

William Saliba may still play in the Coupe de France final for Saint-Etienne later this month.

The defender - who signed for Arsenal in a £27million switch from the French club last summer - was immediately loaned back for the remainder of the season.

Saliba had hoped to extend his stay until July 24, when the rescheduled final will take place. Talks broke down, however, with Saint-Etienne unwilling to follow Arsenal’s training programme for the centre-back, who has been struggling with a foot injury.

Photo: GettyThe club, therefore, stood firm, unwilling to risk the players' welfare - despite Mikel Arteta earlier giving his blessing for Saliba to play in the final.

There is now, however, a small chance that Saliba could still play in the Coupe de France final and Saint-Etienne haven’t given up hope.

The ball, though, remains firmly in Arsenal’s court and they will not entertain the idea of a deal if their terms are not met regarding the player’s fitness programme and any financial costs involved, with Saint-Etienne due around £2million if Saliba plays in the Coupe de France final via an appearance-related clause.

Vardy proof Auba can be key to Arsenal for years to come, says Arteta

Mikel Arteta believes Jamie Vardy’s fine form this season is proof Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will still be delivering in two years’ time as Arsenal continue contract talks with their captain.

Aubameyang’s current deal is due to expire in a year’s time and he is still yet to agree fresh terms.

Arteta views the forward as a key part of his rebuild at Arsenal, but some outside the club have questioned whether a lucrative, long-term contract can be given to a player who turned 31 last month.

Arteta, however, believes Aubameyang still has plenty to offer and the form of 33-year-old Vardy, who Arsenal will face tonight when they take on Leicester, shows that.

Vardy is the top scorer in the Premier League this season and when asked by Standard Sport if he was proof Aubameyang could still be performing in two years, Arteta said: “Absolutely.

“I would like to see where Leicester were today without Vardy in the last three years.

“So I think it is a really good example to consider at least. And, as well, considering both players they are always available.

“They are players that are so resilient and they are able to play 50, 55 games every year and they have been scoring in a consistent way. That’s why I don’t doubt Auba.”

Arsenal team news

Arsenal face a defining run of games over the next fortnight, beginning tonight.

After that they take on Tottenham and Liverpool in the Premier League too, before taking on Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals a week on Saturday.

Head coach Mikel Arteta, as a result, will need to manage his squad through those games as Arsenal will have already played seven matches in 21 days after Tuesday’s clash with Leicester.

For the match with the Foxes, Kieran Tierney may drop into a back-three to provide more pace to deal with the likes of Jamie Vardy and that would see Bukayo Saka move to left wing-back.

Hector Bellerin missed out against Wolves on Saturday, but could come in for Cedric Soares - who is still only just back to full fitness.
