Punjab records 258 new Covid-19 cases, six deaths

With no sign of abating, the tally of Covid-19 continues to swell at a rapid pace as 258 more cases, including six deaths, were reported on Tuesday in Punjab.

CHANDIGARH: With no sign of abating, the tally of Covid-19 continues to swell at a rapid pace as 258 more cases, including six deaths, were reported on Tuesday in Punjab.
Continuing with the trend, bulk of the cases were contacts of positive cases and patients co-infected with influenza-like illness (ILI). In 11 cases, the source of infection was outside of Punjab.
Of the total cases reported in the last 24 hours, 188 (72.86 %) were from the most populated five districts -- Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala and Sangrur--of the state.
The overall tally of the state stands at 6,749 out of which 4,554 patients have been discharged so far.
Ludhiana contributed the highest number of cases to the tally with 78 people testing positive, including 17 contacts of positive cases and 10 cases of people co-infected with ILI.
Sangrur and Ludhiana reported 43 cases each. In Sangrur, 26 cases were contacts of positive cases while in 12 cases the teams of the health department failed to trace the source of infection. In Patiala, 21 cases were contacts of positive cases while in 16 cases the source of infection could not be ascertained.
A total of 26 people were found to be infected in Nawanshahr followed by in Jalandhar where 16 people got infected. In Moga, tests of 14 people came out to be positive. Eight cases surfaced in Amritsar, seven in Kapurthala, five in Pathankot and three each in Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ropar, Ferozepur. Bathinda and Gurdaspur reported two cases each while one case each was added to tally from Hoshiarpur and Faridkot.
A total of six people infected with Covid-19 died--one each from Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Sangrur, Mohali, Ludhiana and Fatehgarh Sahib. The death toll is expected to rise in the next few days as 38 patients are on oxygen support and six on ventilators.
