MUMBAI: In June, the city recorded over 300 cases of malaria, four confirmed cases of dengue, and one leptospirosis infection. While rain-related diseases typically see a surge in July, malaria cases were marginally higher than the number reported in June last year.
There were 328 malaria cases reported this June, and 313 in June last year. Compared to five leptospirosis cases in June last year, there was only one reported to the BMC’s epidemiology cell this June.
Civic officials said it was possible that some cases were not reported due to the lockdown and the focus on Covid. Confirmed dengue cases were halved this year (4), as opposed to the eight in June last year.
However, there were 700-900 suspected dengue hospitalisations in June. “Some numbers are still being collated,” said a civic official. Additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani said, “It could be because of the lockdown. We usually see a spurt in July.” In May, there were 284 malaria, one leptospirosis and six dengue cases. Physician Dr Hemant Thacker said hospitals had begun treating dengue and malaria. “We haven’t seen much gastroenteritis so far,” he said. Gastroenteritis may see a dip as roadside food is not available.
