Birmingham Airport has received a boost with the confirmation a number of Flybe routes have been snapped up by a new airline.

Blue Islands, a Channel Islands-based carrier, will take over a number of routes which belonged to the doomed airline Flybe.

Flybe collapsed in February, grounding flights across the country, including at Birmingham Airport, which is situated near the NEC, in Solihull.

Blue Islands will operate flights from Brum to Exeter as part of the capture.

Rob Veron, chief executive of Blue Islands said the company had been working "really hard" over the past few months with the aim of "re-emerging, post-pandemic, stronger and better than ever".

He said: "Channel Islanders told us that they want flying to be simple and easy again with no hidden costs and stresses over bag restrictions.

"We've listened, taking all the ideas onboard, and we are proud to announce our new product offering, refreshed brand identity and new website."

Mr Vernon said Blue Islands had re-established itself as an independent carrier and there would be "more announcements in the coming days and weeks".

Blue Islands started in 1999 when it was formed as Le Cocq's Air Link to supply perishable goods to the Channel Island of Alderney from Bournemouth using Britten Norman Islanders.
