Coimbatore man arrested for trying to burn wife alive
COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police arrested a 55-year-old man on Thursday for attempting to burn his wife alive over a family dispute on Wednesday night.
Police said Thangaraj, a construction worker, and his wife, Kamala, 50, were living in a slum clearance board house at Ammankulam. Her mother, Kaliyammal, 75, was also residing with them.
The couple have a son and daughter.
Both of them got married a few years ago and live elsewhere.
The Ramanathapuram police said Thangaraj used to consume liquor with his wife. Police said Kamala used to quarrel with Thangaraj over an extramarital affair he had with a woman, who is his relative.
Around 9.30pm on Wednesday, Kamala fought with her husband after consuming liquor. In a fit of rage, he poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. She raised an alarm, and neighbours rushed to the house and doused the fire. She suffered 50% of burn injuries. Kamala's mother also suffered minor burn injuries.
Kamala was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.
Based on her complaint, the Ramanathapuram police registered a case against Thangaraj under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Further inquiries were on.
