Attack on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's Mumbai house: Suspect held

MUMBAI: Matunga police probing the attack on former home of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s on Thursday placed a key suspect under arrest after the accused admitted to have committed the crime. Police on Thursday arrested Umesh Jadhav, 35, and are still looking for the second suspect in the case.
Police said that Jadhav has been arrested and will be produced before the Dadar Metropolitan Magistrate on Friday.Police suspect that the attack could have been pre-planned as one accused stood outside the bungalow keeping a vigil, while the other accused barged inside the compound and damage the flowers/plants and pots.
Preliminary investigations from the CCTV footages suggest that Jadhav was the person who stood outside and kept a watch as his accomplice entered the bungalow and while leaving broke the window panes of 'Rajgruha' situated at Hindu Colony in Dadar.
The two-storey heritage bungalow houses the Ambedkar Museum where Babasaheb stayed and his books, portrait, ashes and vessels among other artifacts are preserved.
"We have just arrested Jadhav and his interrogations are going on. Now we are interrogating him to know the motive behind the attack though he has been misleading us," said an officer.
Jadhav, who stays near Tata Cancer hospital vicinity and is jobless, has corroborated with what Bhimrao Ambedkar, grandson of Ambedkar had told police in his complaint that he was moving around the bungalow on Monday when Bhimrao shouted at him to go away.
Jadhav told police that in a fit of rage he arrived at the spot, entered the bungalow compound and threw all plant pots and than pelted stones on the window panes.
Police have also detained another suspect seen inside the compound who appears like the person seen in the CCTV footages.
Police said that the accused has been booked under the IPC 427 and 447 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees and punishment for criminal trespass).
