Get Outdoors: Split Rock Lighthouse reopens Wednesday

Making iNaturalist Work for You, 10 a.m. July 11, via Zoom. Join Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Scientific and Natural Areas Program naturalist Arika Preas for an interactive live workshop. Learn about iNaturalist, an online citizen science project that aims to make a “living record of life on Earth” by providing a platform for sharing observations of the living world. Split Rock Lighthouse opens, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week starting July 15, Two Harbors. Guests can explore the grounds and the fog signal building and get an up-close look at the lightstation from the outside. Other indoor spaces will be closed. A pop-up store will be set up outside. Timed entry tickets can be purchased at www.mnhs.org/visit or through the box office at 651-259-3015. A limited number of tickets will be available for walk-ups. Cost: $8. This series of volunteer opportunities during the trail-building season are a way for first-time volunteers to get involved, learn basic skills and give back to the Superior Hiking Trail. Fishers: Rarely Seen Carnivores of the North Woods, 10 a.m. July 25, via Zoom. Join Natural Resources Research Institute wildlife ecologist Michael Joyce as he discusses the history and current status of the fisher population in Minnesota via a live meeting. He will talk about their latest research including research to examine cavity availability, whether artificial den boxes are a viable habitat management tool for fishers, and interactions between bobcats and fishers.
