NH Food Bank on pace to set distribution record due to pandemic
A major increase in demand is continuing to challenge the New Hampshire Food Bank.
The Food Bank says if this demand keeps going, it estimates that it will hand out 20 million pounds of food in total by the end of the year. That would be an all-time distribution record.
It comes as the Food Bank says distribution has increased by about 50 percent compared with this time last year.
The Food Bank has also been buying more food to give out than ever before. In fact, just in May, total purchases were up more than 300 percent compared with 2019.
The Food Bank is still hosting mobile food pantries on Fridays in different communities across the state.
The nonprofit says most of the new people who have come to them for help in recent months are families affected by the pandemic.
"There are people who have been gainfully employed that all of a sudden don't have an income coming in that they were used to having. Individuals still have rent to pay, mortgages to pay, vehicles that they need to maintain,” said Nancy Mellitt of the Food Bank.
