CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has extended the complete lockdown in Madurai till midnight on July 14. This comes as Tamil Nadu reported 4244 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday taking the total tally to 1,38,470 in the State.

This Sunday marked yet another day of the State's total lockdown. During these Sunday lockdowns, only medical services and milk supply are permitted to function, the State government said.

The number of deaths on Sunday spiked to 68 making the total number of people who succumbed to the infection rise to 1,966, the state media bulletin confirmed.

Chennai has 74,969 cases in all, of which 1,168 cases were reported on Sunday. The state capital has managed to keep numbers in check this week when compared to the State total. Experts believe the intense lockdown which was imposed in the city and neighbouring Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram from June 19 till July 5 is likely to have helped.

Madurai, which is currently the only district in the State that is continuing with a complete lockdown, recorded 319 cases on Sunday. Sunday marked the last day of the government's complete lockdown in Madurai but owing to the rising cases in the district, the lockdown has been extended for two more days.

The number of cases in the districts have been steadily rising over the last week. Kancheepuram reported 385 cases on Sunday while Chengalpet, Thiruvallur and Virudhunagar had over 200 cases each. In districts like Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Theni, Thiruvannamalai, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Trichy and Vellore there were over 100 cases of Covid-19 reported on Sunday.

The bulletin said 3,617 people were discharged on Sunday and that total recoveries in the state stood at 89,532.

However, testing was at an all-time high on Sunday with 41,325 persons being tested, which has been the highest number of tests conducted in a single day.

A general state-wide lockdown is in place till July 31, but the state government announced a slew of relaxations on Saturday.
