While Disney World and Mickey Mouse welcome guests by the thousands despite record daily coronavirus cases in Florida, the Hong Kong version of the theme park is shutting down Wednesday after 52 new cases in the city.
“As required by the government and health authorities in line with prevention efforts taking place across Hong Kong, Hong Kong Disneyland park will temporarily close from July 15,” Disney said in a statement Monday.
The hotels will remain open with “adjusted levels of services.”
“They have put in place enhanced health and safety measures that reflect the guidance of health and government authorities, such as social distancing measures and increased cleaning and sanitization,” Disney said Monday.
The news comes after Hong Kong reported a spike in coronavirus cases Monday, including its eighth death since the pandemic started.
On the other side of the world, however, Disney World is going strong while Florida buckles under the outbreak.
Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom both reopened Saturday, a day before the Sunshine State reported more than 15,000 new cases, a record one-day total for any U.S. state since the start of the outbreak.
Dozens of Florida hospitals have reported completely full ICUs already.
