- A staff member at Congress office here died by allegedly committing suicide, Delhi Police said on Monday.
- The man, identified as Prakash Singh (45), died at the servant quarter of the office, situated at 24, Akbar Road. He was found hanging in his room which was latched from inside.

- With the highest single-day spike of 40,425 new cases, India's COVID-19 count crossed 11 lakh on Monday.
- The Health Ministry said that the total number of cases in the country now stands at 11,18,043 and the toll has gone up to 27,497 with 681 deaths in the last 24 hours.
- The total number of cases includes 3,90,459 active cases and 7,00,087 cured/discharged/migrated patients.
Indian naval ships conduct passage exercise with USS Nimitz carrier strike group
- With an aim to improve the cooperation between US and Indian maritime forces, Indian naval ships on Monday conducted a passage exercise (PASSEX) with the United States Navy's USS Nimitz carrier strike group near the Andaman and Nicobar islands as it is transiting the Indian Ocean.
- Speaking to ANI, Lt. Cmdr. Liza Dougherty, the warship's spokeswoman, confirmed that the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group which comprises of flagship USS Nimitz (CVN 68), Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton (CG 59), and Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Sterett (DDG 104) and USS Ralph Johnson (DDG 114), is participating in cooperative exercises with the Indian Navy in the Indian Ocean commencing July 20.

Odisha announces incentives for health workers at dedicated COVID facilities in State
- The Odisha State Government on Monday announced monetary incentives for doctors, paramedics, and Class lV employees deployed at dedicated COVID-19 hospitals/health centres across the State.
- The government said an incentive for Rs 1000 per day for doctors, Rs 500 per day for paramedics and Rs 200 per day for Class lV employees will be provided.
International and domestic flight operations in Nepal to resume from August 17.

Egypt extends state of emergency for 3 months
- Egypt's Parliament approved on Monday a presidential decree extending the state of emergency in the country for three more months starting from July 27, state-run Nile TV reported.
- "The decision has been taken to face the ongoing dangerous health and security conditions in the country," the general committee of the House of Representatives said.
- According to the decree, "the armed forces and the police will take the necessary measures to fight terrorism and its finance, maintain security nationwide, protect public and private properties and protect the lives of citizens."
CBDT, MoMSME sign MoU over data sharing
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Monday between the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME) for sharing of data.
- The MoU was signed by Anu J Singh, Principal Director General of Income Tax (Systems), CBDT and Devendra Kumar Singh, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner, MoMSME.
Telangana crosses 46K mark in Covid cases
- Telangana on Monday reported 1,198 new Covid positive cases, taking the total to 46,274 cases, representing a positivity rate of 16.8%.
- The state suffered 7 Covid deaths on Monday, taking the toll to 422 so far, translating into a mortality rate of 0.91%.
- The state reported 34,323 discharges, translating into 74%, and active cases of 11,530 that represent 25%.
- Over the last 24 hours, the state tested 11,003 samples, taking the total to 2,76,222 tests to date.
Uttar Pradesh home quarantine
State Health Minister Jai Pratap Singh said:
- There will be a self-declaration form for patients.
- Home isolation will only be for asymptomatic patients.
- If anyone has a flu or fever, he will be kept in a hospital.
- Those on home isolation will be in touch with surveillance teams and will be connected through the call centre.
Allow home quarantine only if coronavirus protocols followed: UP CM to officials
- At a meeting with senior officials, the chief minister directed that home quarantine permission should be given only on compliance of the already set protocols for it, an official release said.
- Fearing that there may be a spurt in cases as a large number of asymptomatic people are hiding their infection, the CM said it will be essential that the patient and his family comply with the protocol.
- People should also be apprised of the necessary precautions for which an awareness campaign should also be launched with the help of the print, electronic and social media, he said.

Madurai court sends 3 cops to CBI custody in Thoothukudi custodial deaths case
- A Madurai court on Monday sent three police personnel, accused in the Thoothukudi custodial deaths case, to three-day CBI custody.
- The three cops sent to CBI custody are -- Chelladurai, Samathurai and Veyilmuthu.
- Ten policemen have been arrested in connection with the alleged custodial death of a father and son, the investigation of which has been handed over to CBI. The case was previously registered at Kovilpatti East Police Station.

- A special CBI court in Lucknow is slated to record the statement of senior BJP leader LK Advani in connection with the Babri Masjid demolition case on July 24 through video conferencing.

Coronavirus drug by UK-based company shows 'positive results' in clinical trial
- The preliminary results of the trial of a new treatment for COVID-19 "greatly reduced" the number of hospitalised COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care, said the company that developed it.
- In a statement dated July 20, UK-based Synairgen plc announced positive results from its trial of SNG001, the company's wholly-owned inhaled formulation of interferon-beta in hospitalised COVID-19 patients.

Andhra reports 4,074 new Covid cases, crosses 53K mark, suffers 54 deaths
- Andhra Pradesh on Monday reported one of the highest single-day Covid positive cases of 4,074 which takes the total to 53,724 cases so far. The state on Monday suffered 54 Covid deaths, which takes the toll to 696 by Monday.
- Andhra reported discharging 24,228 persons so far while reporting 28,800 active cases by Monday.
- Over the last 24 hours, the state tested 33,580 samples, taking the total to 13,49,112 tests to date, the third-highest in India after Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
- AP reported 25,264 tests per million population against the national average of 10,128 tests.
- The state saw a positivity rate of 3.98% as against the national average of 7.96%, a recovery rate of 45.1% against the national average of 62.62% and a mortality rate of 1.3% as against the national average of 2.46%.
Lightning kills 5 in West Bengal's Jhargram
- Five people died and 27others injured in lightning strikes in West Bengals Jhargram district on Monday, police said.
- Several parts of the district witnessed lightning strikes accompanied by heavy rain during the afternoon.
Sikkim to remain under complete lockdown from July 21 to 27
- The Sikkim government on Monday decided to impose a complete lockdown in the state from July 21 to July 27 in view of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, officials said.
- The decision to impose the lockdown was taken after reviewing guidelines for the management of the COVID-19 situation in the state, a notification issued by Chief Secretary S C Gupta said.

- The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has decided to hold the personality tests (PTs)/interviews for the remaining candidates from July 20 to July 30, 2020.
- "The UPSC was in the midst of conducting the PTs/interviews for 2,304 candidates for the Civil Services Examination, 2019 (CSE-2019) when the Centre Government imposed the COVID-19 lockdown," according to a UPSC release.
16 people killed in lightning strikes in Bihar, weather dept issues alert
- As many as 16 people were killed in lightning strikes during a thunderstorm in ten districts of Bihar on Sunday, state Disaster Management Department said on Monday.
- The meteorological department has issued an alert in the State and warned people of venturing out into the open in Bihar during rainfall in the state.
- According to data, three people died in Purnia district, two in Begusarai, four in Gaya and one each in Patna, Saharsa, Purvi Champaran, Madhepura, Darbhanga, Nawada and Banka.

Gehlot calls Pilot names, says he was 'useless'
- Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday called Sachin Pilot “useless”, using the Hindi word “nikamma” in a no-holds-barred attack on his former deputy with whom he is locked in a power tussle.
- “We knew he is `nikamma' (useless), he is `nakara' (idle) and not doing any work,” the chief minister told reporters, his choice of blunt words indicating that there is no chance now of a reconciliation between the two.
