Labour has promised to stand 'shoulder-to-shoulder' with the Government against 'poisonous' anti-Vax propaganda.

The commitment was made by Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Jonathan Ashworth in the House of Commons.

His comments came following a breakthrough in global attempts to find a coronavirus vaccine earlier today.

Early trials showed a vaccine developed by Oxford University triggers an immune response.

The ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine, developed in partnership with AstraZeneca, was shown to produce antibodies and T-cells that can fight Covid-19.

Mr Ashworth said: "(Health Secretary Matt Hancock) has my commitment that when a vaccine is available, I will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him in taking on poisonous anti-vax propaganda."

Earlier today, the health secretary tweeted that results from the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine trials was “very encouraging news”.

The government has already ordered 100 million doses of the vaccine.

But the success of the vaccine to eliminate the virus would depend on people agreeing to be injected with it.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, misinformation about the dangers of vaccines has been spread online.

Responding to Mr Ashworth in the Commons, Mr Hancock said he was 'grateful' for his support in combating anti-vax propaganda.

“I’m grateful for his offer to stand shoulder-to-shoulder against the anti-vaccination movement," he said.

“Those who promulgate lies about dangers of vaccines that are safe and have been approved - they are threatening lives and we should all stand shoulder-to-shoulder against the anti-vax movement.”
