VIJAYAPURA: A 28-year-old Dalit man was assaulted by a group for reportedly touching the vehicle owned by an upper-caste person in the district’s Minajagi village of Talikoti taluk, and his parents and sister who tried to rescue him were also beaten up.
The incident that took place on Saturday came to light on Monday after the assault video went viral, triggering outrage in the district.

Kashinath and his family members are undergoing treatment at Muddebihal Government Hospital. The victim has suffered severe internal injuries and his family members were treated for minor injuries, sources said.
The victim’s father Yankappa Husanappa Talawar has filed a complaint stating his son Kashinath was assaulted by a group of 13 people when they were going to their agriculture.
Kashinath pleaded for mercy, but they assaulted him. When I tried to intervene along with my wife and daughter, they thrashed me and threatened to set our house and the entire Dalit Colony on fire. I’m scared to go back to my village now,” he told police.
Vijayapura district superintendent of police Anupam Agarwal told TOI they have registered a case against13 persons under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and arrested three of them.
When a police team visited the village on Sunday, some upper-caste villagers accused Kashinath of misbehaving with two girls on Saturday, and some women, too, made similar allegations. The SP said they were probing the allegation though there is no complaint yet.
The SP, who visited the village on Monday, has deployed additional personnel as a precautionary measure.
“Even if Kashinath had made a mistake, they should have filed a police complaint. The video shows that the caste factor was behind the assault. We will protest till Kashinath and his family get justice,” said Mahantesh Kattimani, taluk president of Dalit Sangharsh Samiti.
