OC removed over migrant worker’s death in Birbhum
SURI: Two police officers in Birbhum’s Suri are facing the heat over the unnatural death of a 22-year-old migrant worker who committed suicide allegedly after being humiliated and beaten up at a thana over theft accusations.
While Lokepur police station OC Ramesh Saha has been removed from duty, another officer has been suspended. Birbhum district police brass though refused to comment on why they had been shunted.

Labourer Souvik Garai, a resident of Rupushpur village, had returned home from Gujarat a couple of months ago. He found a job at a mithai shop. A few days ago, his employer accused Souvik of stealing money and documents.
The youth’s family has alleged that police took him to the thana without any probe and thrashed him. Souvik, his bereaved father said, could not cope with the humiliation even after returning home and killed himself on Monday night.
