Tamil Nadu govt sanctions Rs 10.19 crore to dig community wells
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 10.19 crore to install community wells for the benefit of 1,233 small, marginal, SC/ST and women farmers in the state.
The scheme announced in assembly will be implemented through the agriculture engineering department. The scheme will benefit the members of the 118 farmers organisations in 47 revenue firkas, that have been identified by the public works department as safe for groundwater extraction in 14 districts.
The districts are Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Krishnagiri, Kanyakumari, Chengalpet, Madurai, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Sivaganga, Tiruvallur, Virudhunagar, Kallakurichi and Villupuram.
The scheme is aimed at digging tube wells, borewells, open wells, and installing solar-powered pump sets, and supplying water through pipes to the field, said an official release.
The state government will extend up to a maximum of Rs three lakh for digging 90m depth tube well, Rs 1.1 lakh for 100m depth borewell, Rs 6.5 lakh for 20m depth open wells. Installation of 5HP solar water pumps will get a maximum of Rs 3.25 lakh, 5HP electric water pumps Rs 75,000 and laying of water pipes Rs 20,000. The members shall bear the additional expenses if they want to increase the depth or additional HP pump sets.
The farmers organisations should register with the cooperative societies to avail the benefits of the scheme. They should judiciously use the water among themselves and bear the expenditure arising out of maintenance of the facilities and the electricity charges. The government would take efforts to expand the scheme to other districts, the release added.
