Daily cases in Tamil Nadu almost 7,000 again; toll crosses 3,500

The number of fresh Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu were seven short of 7,000 on Monday, pushing the total tally to 2,20,716. The state reported 77 deaths that took the cumulative toll to 3,521. As many as 5,723 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours and 54,896 patients were still under treatment.

CHENNAI: The number of fresh Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu were seven short of 7,000 on Monday, pushing the total tally to 2,20,716. The state reported 77 deaths that took the cumulative toll to 3,521. As many as 5,723 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours and 54,896 patients were still under treatment.
Despite showing a steady decline in fresh and active cases, Chennai continued to be the worst hit district.
The state capital reported 1,138 fresh cases and 21deaths in the last 24 hours while its neighbours Tiruvallur (474) Chengalpet (448) and Kancheepuram (362) together recorded 1,284 cases. These districts reported 1,344 cases on Sunday. Chennai region together reported 2,422 cases and 39 deaths on Monday.
Other northern districts to record high incidence were Tiruvannamalai (267), Ranipet (273) and Kallakurichi (238). Together, the 11 northern districts (including Chennai) recorded 3,685 cases and 31,095 people were still under treatment.
While Madurai’s tally touched 10,057 cases, the first district in the South to cross 10,000 cases, Coimbatore in the West recorded its highest-ever single day count of 313 fresh cases.
A total of 1,993 fresh Covid-19 positive cases were reported in the 10 southern districts of Tamil Nadu. This takes the total Covid-19 positive cases reported in the region to 43,582 including 14,970 active cases. Twenty-one more deaths on Monday, including six each in Madurai and Virudhunagar, have taken the total toll in the south to 559. Tuticorin (349) recorded the highest number of fresh cases, followed by Virudhunagar (338), Theni (280), Madurai (249), Kanyakumari (239), Tirunelveli (191), and Dindigul (133).

In the west, Salem recorded 190 fresh cases, Krishnagiri 60, Dharmapuri 32 and Erode 27. Tirupur and Nilgiris clocked 39 fresh cases each while Namakkal had 38. The western region’s total Covid tally became 11,137, almost 70% from Coimbatore and Salem districts. The region also saw six deaths notified on the day taking the toll to 106.
With 566 new cases, the Central region of Tamil Nadu crossed the 11,000 cases mark. Trichy recorded 188 cases, Thanjavur 153, Pudukottai 98, Tiruvarur 67, Ariyalur 48, Perambalur 21, Nagapattinam 22, and Karur 7.
