Coronavirus in Tamil Nadu: Virudhunagar follows Chennai in number of fresh cases
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu reported 6,972 fresh Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, pushing the total tally to 2,27,688.
With 57,073 people still under treatment, hospitals in smaller towns and districts are crowded and several healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses, were affected in government hospitals.
A total of 88 deaths in the last 24 hours took the cumulative toll to 3,659 in the state.

Chennai continued to report the highest number of cases. The state capital clocked 1,107 fresh cases. The adjoining districts Chengalpet (365), Kancheepuram (223) and Tiruvallur (486) together reported 1,074 cases.
While the Chennai region together logged 31% of fresh cases, what seemed more worrying to doctors is that it reported 50% of the deaths reported on Tuesday.
While Chennai reported 24 deaths, Chengalpet and Kancheepuram recorded six deaths each and Tiruvallur reported eight. There were 23,767 active cases in the region.
The eleven northern districts together logged 3,283 cases and 26 deaths. The cumulative regional tally touched 60,046 and toll reached 780.

After north, the southern districts reported 2,458 Covid-19 cases and deaths. The ten districts have until now recorded at 46,038 cases and 585 deaths. The highest number of cases in the southern region was reported in Virudhunagar (577). The district reported the second highest number of fresh cases after Chennai. With this, Virudhunagar has a total of 6,884 cases, including 2484 active cases and 69 deaths.
Three more districts saw more than 300 cases in south -- Tirunelveli (387), Tuticorin (381) and Madurai (346).
The eight districts in the central region, have reported 692 cases and total number of cases touched 11,763. With 209 fresh cases, Thanjavur reported the highest number of cases in region, which together saw seven deaths on Tuesday.
So far, there have been 126 deaths and 4,487 active cases.
The eight western districts recorded 498 new cases and five deaths. Coimbatore (273) continued to have the highest number of cases.
As many as 4,707 people were discharged taking the number of people cured to 1,66,956.
