Faced with a rapid surge in Covid-19 cases, the Mahbubnagar district administration is strictly enforcing contaiment measures. The district has as many as 191 containment zones — by far the most in the state. In comparison, Greater Hyderabad from where a majority of the positive cases are reported has 92 containment zones.
The most number of containment zones are in Mahbubnagar town itself.
According to a medical bulletin, the town has 131 containment zones. “It is important for public to realise they should adhere to rules in containment zones and stay at home,” DMHO Dr K Krishna said. “In villages, it is easier to enforce rules than in urban areas. That is where cooperation of people is needed most,” he told TOI.
According to latest figures, 715 Covid-19 positive cases have been detected in Mahbubnagar. There have been 24 deaths. If the erstwhile Mahbubnagar district is taken into account by including Naryanapet,
Gadwal,
Wanaparthy and
Nagarkurnool, the tally goes up to 2,144 positive cases with 61 deaths. In Mahbubnagar, and also in other districts, traders realised the gravity of the situation and have gone in for a voluntary lockdown in many areas.
“We have put up hoardings everywhere asking people to take precautions. Shops are also implementing a ‘no mask no sale’ policy,” municipal commissioner V Surender said.
Earlier, the concept of a containment zone could mean including all areas within a one
kilometre range, if necessary. In villages, it could even be up to 5km.
“That cannot be implemented now. But the containment zone is restricted to a small locality or just a street where a positive case has been reported. In those areas, disinfection is taken up and spraying is done,” Surender said.
