NEW DELHI: Chandan Kumar Mondol on Saturday took over as director (commercial) of state-run generation utility NTPC, India's largest power producer. During his 35-year stint with the company, he served as executive director supervising the company's western region-1, hydro and commercial operations.
Mondol joined NTPC in the company's 9th batch of executive trainees in 1984.
He has has worked in both power plant and corporate functions. He started his journey with the execution and commissioning of the company's 3X500 MW units at Ramagundam and 4X210 MW units at Kahalgaon power stations.
As a strategic planner, Mondol led several initiatives at NTPC. In 1998, he joined corporate commercial department where he worked towards developing commercial & marketing strategies, execution of domestic and international power purchase agreements, formulation of tariff regulations with Central power regulator, and NTPC's participation in bidding for Ultra Mega Power Plants. He represented NTPC in the formulation of various Central government policies and statutes, including the Electricity Act 2003, the National Electricity Policy, the Tariff Policy and the Competitive Bidding Guidelines.
He joined corporate planning in 2012 as head of strategic planning division and was also responsible for periodic review of the business plan, organisational restructuring, identifying risks and mitigation through comprehensive enterprise risk management policies. He took charge as business unit head of Khargone in March 2015 and was responsible for the execution of 1,320 MW greenfield power project involving land acquisition, right of use, right of way, relief and rehabilitation plan, project planning and construction as well as boundary management with the local administration, state government and other statutory authorities.
