NAVI MUMBAI: Animal rights activists have rescued eight young buffaloes from Shivajinagar in Mumbai and 20 bulls from Mangaon in Raigad district in the last 48 hours just before they were to be illegally slaughtered. The rescued animals have been sent to different cattle shelters in and around Mumbai.
"Our volunteers of Karuna Parivar NGO had received tip-offs that for the occasion of Bakr Eid, a total of 20 bulls were illegally kept at Moraba village in Mangaon taluka, while eight young buffaloess were got to Rafiq Nagar in Shivajinagar area of Mumbai for slaughtering them.
We immediately contacted the Raigad district police officials as well as the Shivajinagar police station in Mumbai in order to stop their illegal killings. FIRs have been registered at the local police stations," said activist Bhavin Gathani of Karuna Parivar NGO.
While the Mangaon police have registered an offence against one person under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 1995, Shivajinagar police have booked two persons under the same law.
"The Bombay high court directives with regards to the slaughtering of animals during Bakr-Eid are quite lucid, stating that the animals like goats can be slaughtered only in a legitimate abattoir, like the one at Deonar. Hence, it is cruel and illegal to transport such large animals to any other location for the purpose of killing them," said another city-based activist.
