Herrboldt’s late RBI sends Tyndall past Salem for VFW Class B crown

CANOVA -- Trent Herrboldt came up big when his team needed it.

With the score knotted 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning of the South Dakota VFW Class B 16-and-under state championship game, Herrboldt delivered an RBI single to send Tyndall past Salem, 5-4.

Salem grabbed an early 2-0 lead and when Tyndall came back to tie the game, Braeden Kerkhove plated a run on a ground ball and an error reestablished the two-run lead. Tyndall slowly crept back into the game, though, as Logan Winckler drove in a run on a ground out and Riley Rothschadl tied the game with a double in the top of the fifth.

Salem put a runner on with a lead-off walk in the bottom of the seventh and Bobby Koepsell advanced him with a bunt and a ground out moved Trevor Hansen to third, only for Winckler to register a game-ending strikeout.

Rothschadl and Dawson Bietz had two hits apiece, while Herrboldt had two RBIs.

Avery Fterl went 3-for-4, while Kerkhove had a pair of RBIs.

Tyndall beat Canova 2-1 in the semifinals, while Salem scored an 11-6 win over Gregory.

Canova 13, Gregory 5

CANOVA -- Trailing 4-3 heading into the sixth inning, Canova poured on 10 runs to surge past Gregory for third place, 13-5.

Canova scored six runs in the sixth on four walks and three errors, followed by three runs on two hits in the seventh inning. Kieffer Klinkhammer had a two-run single and Luke Koepsell had an RBI single with two outs.

Klinkhammer had three RBIs in the game, while Koepsell had two. Karsyn Feldhaus also drove in a run. Jackson Remmers was 3-for-4 and Weston Remmers was 2-for-3. Jackson Remmers was also the winning pitcher, going three innings and allowing one earned run on five hits. Lane Miller threw four innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits.

Rylan Peck and Bryce Frank had two RBIs apiece, while Coy Determan went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Gregory.

Wessington Springs 7, Garretson 5

CANOVA -- Wessington Springs scored all seven of its runs in the first two innings and held off a furious charge from Garretson late to earn fifth place.

Garretson scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning until finally earning a pop fly with runners on the corners.

Dylan Schimke started the scoring for Wessington Springs with an RBI triple, while Quinten Christensen also drove in a run on a single as part of a four-run first inning. Clay Olinger had a two-run single in the second and Mason Schelske drove in another run with a single with two outs.

Schmike was 2-for-4 and Schelske was 2-for-3. Christensen earned the win on the mound, tossing six innings and allowing two earned runs on two hits.

Jayse Miller had three RBIs in defeat for Garretson, which advanced to the fifth-place game by defeating Clark 3-2 in the elimination round. Wessington Springs beat Elkton 4-3 in the elimination round.
