PUNE: An administrative will, supportive government machinery and hardworking teachers improved the secondary school certificate (SSC, Std X) pass percentage from 70 in 2019 to 95 in 2020 in the state board examination in Akola district.
Over 20,000 students from Akola district appeared for the SSC examination conducted by the state board and secured a pass percentage of 95.5. When the district performed abysmally low in 2019 with a pass percentage of 70.8, the Zilla Parishad (ZP) started a ‘Mission Matric’ programme.
Regular meetings, training for teachers, counselling for students and adherence to an action plan prepared by the District Institute for Education and Training resulted in an improved pass percentage.
Ayush Prasad, then chief executive officer of Akola ZP, called for a meeting of headmasters, education and extension officers, along with Chief Minister Fellows, Shubham Badgujar and Siddhesh Haryan, from the district. The aim was to identify the problems plaguing the sector and recommend solutions.
Badgujar said, “We visited the schools and found many lacunae. A major problems was the lack of teachers. The administration solved the issue by telling teachers from well-performing schools to spend some hours teaching at weaker schools. We also kept a record on whether or not the schools have kept their word when it came to the results of the first-term exams.”
The District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) was roped in. The institute prepared a pattern that can be followed in each subject to ensure that maximum students would clear the subjects. “The next task was making teachers familiar with the paper pattern. Counselling sessions were also held for poor-performing students so that they feel confident and try to achieve a higher score,” said Samadhan Dukare, principal of DIET Akola.
Over 40% poor performing students cleared the next practice test. This proved to be a confidence boost.

“There was a massive movement at all levels to increase the pass percentage in schools. Right from the education officer to the fellows to schoolteachers and students. It was a persistent effort that led to the high success rate,” said Prasad, who is now the CEO of Pune Zilla Parishad.
