NEW DELHI: Delhi high court has sought the response of the Centre and Delhi Police to respond to petitions by 24 foreigners seeking quashing of FIRs, lodged against them, by the Crime Branch, for attending Tablighi Jamaat event at Nizamuddin Markaz in violation of visa norms and Covid-19 guidelines.
Justice Anup J Bhambhani asked the Centre and police to file their status reports on the issue before the next date of hearing on August 10, after he was informed that these 24 foreigners have admitted their guilt and pleaded for lenient punishments under the provisions of plea bargaining.

Subsequently, they were allowed to walk free on payment of fine and pleaded guilty for minor offences related to the Covid-19 lockdown violations. But still they are unable to return to their respective countries due to the pendency of other FIRs lodged at Seelampur police station.
In the other case, police have also filed a chargesheet before the trial court, the petitioners told the high court, submitting that police cannot lodge separate FIRs for the same alleged offence, which has led to opening of look out circulars against them.
