    BJP in Assam has barred general secretaries from contesting the next year’s assembly polls

    Ruling BJP in Assam is targeting to win 100 plus seats in the assembly polls slated for early next year. BJP has 61 MLAs while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) had won 14 and 12 seats respectively in assembly polls in 2016.

    Guwahati: BJP in Assam has barred general secretaries from contesting the next year’s assembly polls.

    The party has constituted a set of new officer bearers in the state unit.

    Convener of media cell of state BJP Dewan Dhrubajyoti Moral told ET, “The party has decided that general secretaries will not be contesting the election.”

    Presently three Members of Parliament, Dr Rajdeep Roy of Silchar, Tapan Gogoi of Jorhat and Pallab Lochan Das of Tezpur are general secretaries.

    Assam unit BJP president Ranjeet Dass was re-elected as the party president for second term in January this year. He has announced the new team of officer bearers.

    In the new committee eight leaders are vice-president and there are 10 secretaries. Anup Barman was given charge of the youth wing of the party while Aparajita Bhuyan was made president of the women's wing.

    In 2016 assembly polls All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) just won 13 seats. Congress had 25 MLAs in 2016, later one resigned from congress and contested from BJP and won.
