NEW DELHI: Two teenagers drowned in the Yamuna in separate incidents on Tuesday morning. Including these, as many as three incidents of drowning have taken place within 24 hours on the same stretch of the river. A probe revealed that the place where the teenagers drowned had a strong undercurrent.
Following the incidents, fire officers have asked civic authorities to put up warning signs on the Yamuna banks between Timarpur and Kotwali to prevent people from jumping in.

The first incident was reported near the Signature Bridge, where three youths had jumped into the river for a swim, but started drowning due to the heavy current. Two of them were saved by a fisherman. The third youth, who got flown down the river, was identified as Himanshu, a resident of northeast Delhi. The rescued youths were Dipanshu and Satya Prakash.
Himanshu's body was later recovered by a team of divers from the boat club.
The second incident was reported at the same spot where two youths from the Burari area, Rinku and Dheeraj, had gone for a swim. On reaching the middle of the river, both of them started crying for help and the locals raised an alarm.
Members of the boat club and some fishermen jumped in to rescue them, but managed to pull out only Dheeraj. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Search for Rinku was still on.
A probe revealed that since the construction of a new bridge, the depth of the water in the river stretch has become deeper.
