CHENNAI: After days of cloudy skies, Chennai may begin the weekend with some showers, as weathermen have forecast light rain in the next 48 hours. Weather watchers said rainfall could continue for at least three days while heavy monsoon rains are expected to lash parts of west Tamil Nadu.
The regional meteorological centre (RMC), Chennai has forecast, “The sky condition may be generally cloudy.
Light rain is likely to occur in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperature will be around 36 and 28°C in the city for the next 48 hours.”
N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC Chennai said for the next 24 hours scattered heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rain is likely to occur over Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Theni districts. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Erode, Dindigul and Vellore districts.
“Chennai and its suburban areas will have mostly cloudy skies and light rain is likely in some areas of the city on Saturday,” he said. On Thursday, Devala and Avalanche in Nilgiris district recorded 36cm and 35cm rainfall, Chinnakalar and Cincona in Coimbatore district registered 31cm and 29cm and Periyaru in Theni district recorded 20cm.
Weather watchers said rain in the city this weekend could be due to a strong wind convergence near the east coast. This favourable wind convergence would be prior to the formation of a low pressure, which has been forecast, over Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to reduce the strength of the westerlies in this part of the region allowing the easterlies into the land and converge. According to IMD’s regional weather inference, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over north and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around August 9. Skymet Weather said the system is likely to cross south Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coast.
