Burglars wearing only innerwear on the prowl in Coimbatore; one detained

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore police on Friday night detained a member of a gang that broke into some homes in the city in the last few days and stole valuables from at least one house. The gang members roamed the city wearing only innerwear, police said.
The Singanallur (law and order) police who were on night patrol picked up a man on Friday night. The man has been identified as Veeramani of Ooty.
The police said he was an ex-convict and his accomplices were also facing criminal cases.
Four police teams are trying to detain six more members of the gang.
On Thursday night, the gang climbed a compound wall of a newly constructed house at AG Pudur near Irugur and attempted to burgle the house. People living in nearby houses switched on their lights, and the gang managed to escape.
Later, the men attempted to break open a house at Kotari Nagar in Singanallur. However, the neighbours noticed the movement of the strangers and raised an alarm. The unidentified men managed to escape from the house.
They attempted to break open a house at Kathiravan Garden. The residents raised an alarm and the gang left the place. Later, they tried burglary at a house in Shruthi Enclave. However, their effort went in vain as the residents raised an alarm. The residents informed the Singanallur police who rushed to the spot and held inquiry.

On Wednesday night, the group of men attempted to break open a house at Poonga Nagar near Irugur. A woman entrepreneur has taken the place on rent to stock material. Inmates of other houses noticed the presence of the strangers and switched on lights. The men ran away from the place.
A few days ago, the same gang attempted to break open three houses at Pattanampudur near Sulur. Later, the men broke open a house and stole 12 sovereigns of gold ornaments. The CCTV footage of the men were handed over to the Sulur police.
They were first caught on CCTV camera while roaming in residential areas at Deepam Nagar in Irugur on July 23. The seven men were wearing underwear and held sticks and some weapons, police said. Four men were found roaming at Balaguru garden at Peelamedu on early July 25 morning.
