NOIDA: The Noida Covid Hospital (NCH) will dedicate all its resources to treating serious Covid patients, not only from the city but also neighbouring NCR districts like Ghaziabad, Hapur and Bulandshahr, chief minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Saturday while inaugurating the facility.
Though NCH has a capacity of 400 beds, making it the largest state-run Covid hospital in UP, it is starting operations with 168.
The CM said beds would be ramped up to capacity and the hospital would function as an L2 and L3 facility (for serious and critical patients who need advanced care or oxygen and ventilator support). This means instead of adding 200 L1 beds (for mildly symptomatic patients), which was the original plan, L2 and L3 beds will be set up instead.
The instructions to admit patients from other districts is significant because access to treatment in a hospital in another district had been a problem for critical patients, with several complaints of people being turned away being reported in the past few months.
“Given the advanced equipment and facilities at the hospital, the CM directed us to not only scale up the bed capacity but also ensure accessible treatment to patients from Ghaziabad, Meerut, Bulandshahr and other nearby areas,” said Narendra Bhooshan, the nodal officer in charge of Covid care in Noida.
The hospital, spread across eight floors, has been developed by Tata Trusts in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It currently has three ICU-cum-emergency wards with 28 beds and 10 ventilators.
On Saturday, the chief minister toured the hospital and expressed satisfaction with its equipment and laboratory. He also said the state government had set aside Rs 450 crore for Covid-related measures. “So far, UP has arranged for 1.51 lakh beds for Covid patients. The state had only one lab till two months ago. But now, we have set up 32 testing labs across the state and 30 lakh people have been tested there. The government is committed to deal with the virus,” said the CM.

He appreciated the Noida health department’s efforts in keeping the case fatality rate below 1% despite a high number of cases and directed officials to sharpen the response to the pandemic so that further deaths can be prevented. “Increased surveillance, testing and treatment are the only ways of containing the spread of the infection. This should be followed at all levels,” the CM said.
He later convened a meeting to oversee Covid preparedness in all the six districts in the Meerut division. “He was satisfied with the work done in Noida and asked us to continue with our efforts. He was particularly appreciative about two things — the low fatality rate in Noida and the command control system that we have set up,” said Suhas LY, the Noida district magistrate.
After the inauguration, the CM visited the 24x7 integrated Covid control room in Sector 59. Set up on April 3, the control room has received 2.5 lakh calls so far on issues related to hospital visits, ambulances, food and groceries. Yogi asked officials in the other districts under Meerut division to set up similar control rooms.
Earlier on Friday evening, on reaching GB Nagar, the chief minister met MPs and MLAs and discussed issues such as school fee, waiving fixed charge in electricity bills for industries and salaries of nurses, among others.
