Karnataka coast receives steady rains with less severity

Downpour continued in the three coastal districts of Karnataka for the second day on Sunday, but with less severity. However, the continuous rain saw many low lying areas, houses near river banks, agricultural fields, inundated in all the three districts.

MANGALURU: Downpour continued in the three coastal districts of Karnataka for the second day on Sunday, but with less severity. However, the continuous rain saw many low lying areas, houses near river banks, agricultural fields, inundated in all the three districts.
In Brahmavar taluk of Udupi district paddy fields in Uppoor village were under water, so did the fields near Madisalu rivulet in Aroor village.
District administration has kept the boats ready in case of evacuation emergency. The houses on the Sita Nadi near NIlavar village are also in danger due to rising water level in the river. In Mangaluru, the house of Harish at Adarsha Nagar, Jalligudde was damaged due to mudslide on Sunday,
On the Coast, Udupi received the highest amount of rainfall at 102mm, followed by Dakshina Kannada at 65mm and Uttara Kannada at 46mm. The highest Rainfall in the state was recorded at three places in Udupi district. While Innanje recorded 275mm, Bammarabetta recorded 273 mm and Kurkalu recorded 184 mm of rainfall.
The rainfall Uttara Kannada District received in the last 24 hours was 50% more than the average rainfall that the district recorded for the day. Similarly, Udupi district received 147% excess amount of rainfall and for DK, it was 104 excess than the average recorded for the day. In Dakshina Kannada district the taluks of Bantwal, Belthangady and Mangaluru received rains in excess of 85mm and it was less than 65mm in Puttur and Sullia. The water levels in the major rivers - Nethravathi and Kumaradhara - were steady but close to danger levels like on Saturday.
KSNMDC bulletin stated that high waves in the range of 3.5 - 6.1 meters were forecast till 11.30pm on Monday along the coast of Karnataka from Mangaluru to Karwar. Strong wind with speeds reaching 50-60 kmph was also likely to prevail along and off Karnataka coast; the bulletin stated warning fishermen not to venture into these sea. The rain prediction stated that the Coastal districts would have widespread moderate to heavy rains associated with strong surface winds and scattered very heavy to extremely heavy rains over Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts.
