GHAZIABAD: A 27-year-old man was arrested from his house in Indirapuram on Saturday, two years after a 24-year-old woman he had befriended on Facebook was found hanging.
Mayank Sharma had been accused of abetment to suicide and police said he was evading arrest for the past two years. According to the complaint, the woman, Priyanka Verma, allegedly killed herself after Mayank refused to marry her.

The two had become friends on Facebook in February 2017 and Mayank, then a manager with a private firm in Indirapuram, had allegedly persuaded Priyanka to come to Ghaziabad saying there were a lot of job opportunities in Delhi-NCR.

Priyanka, who was completing her graduation from a college in Rajasthan’s Kota, came to Ghaziabad in August 2017 and started staying in a rented flat in Indirapuram. She also got a job with a private company here.
“They had become friends on Facebook. The accused had persuaded the woman to come to NCR, saying there were more job opportunities. The woman came to Ghaziabad and started working with a private company. She stayed in a rented house in Amrapali village in Indirapuram,” the complaint said.

According to the complaint, it was Mayank who had proposed marriage to the woman. “Priyanka’s mother had met Mayank a couple of times and was in favour of their relationship. But after a few months, Mayank backed off from the relationship and asked Priyanka to go back to Kota,” it said.
SP (city) Manish Kumar Mishra said Priyanka was found hanging in her room on April 16, 2018. “After the accused refused to marry her, she went into depression. When her flat mates had left for work that day, she hanged herself from the ceiling fan,” he added. The woman’s mother had lodged a written complaint naming Mayank the next day. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered against him under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC at Indirapuram police station.
Udayveer, the investigating officer in the case, said it took the cops two years to arrest the accused because he was untraceable all this while. “All the evidence worked against Mayank but we could not trace him. He changed his phone number and kept changing his location from time to time. On Saturday, we received a tip-off that he was coming home to Indirapuram. He was arrested from his house,” the officer said, adding he’s been sent to 14 days in judicial custody.
