COIMBATORE: The Kavundampalayam -GN Mills stretch of the Mettupalayam Road will be closed for six months starting next week due to construction of two flyovers.
The national highway (NH) wing of the state highways (SH) department has started the construction of a km-long flyover at Kavundampalayam to ease traffic. Another 650-metre-long flyover will be constructed at GN Mills on the Mettupalayam Road.

The order to close the road was announced after National Highway wing officials approached R Mutharasu, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Coimbatore city, and Ara Arularasu, superintendent of police, Coimbatore district, seeking the closure of the road.
DCP Mutharasu said once the Mettupalayam Road is closed, motorists will have to use the Bharathi Park Road, GCT junction, Thadagam Road, Kanuvai, Pannimadai to reach the Mettupalayam Road via K Vadamadurai.
Vehicles coming from Mettupalayam to Coimbatore city are requested to take a left turn at Thudiyalur junction to reach Kannappa Nagar through Vellakinar and Nallampalayam to reach Coimbatore city.
Heavy traffic is expected to be reported on the already busy Thadagam and Vellakinar roads, with the new route changes.
District Collector K Rajamani said a meeting would be convened with the officials of the national highway, police and other departments to study the possibilities to ease the traffic during the construction work.
