Assam: Dibrugarh tax superintendent succumbs to coronavirus
DIBRUGARH: The superintendent of taxes of Dibrugarh district, Reejumoni Gohain, succumbed to the novel coronavirus late on Sunday at the Assam Medical College and Hospital.
The 47-year-old tax official had rendered her service as a frontline covid warrior in Guwahati for over three months until her transfer to Dibrugarh. As she was not keeping well for a few days, she was admitted to a private hospital in Dibrugarh on Saturday where she tested positive for Covid-19.
On Sunday, her condition suddenly deteriorated following which she was shifted to the covid care facility of the Assam Medical College and Hospital. Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted the death of the tax official.
In a condolence message on Monday, commissioner and secretary finance Shyam Jagannathan said, “With immense grief we acknowledge the untimely departure of Reejumoni Gohain who passed away in the line of duty on August 9.. She had joined the service as inspector of taxes and was recently promoted as superintendent of taxes. During her tenure as taxation officer, she was known to be diligent, bright and honest who performed her duties sincerely and effectively. She served till the very end as a frontline Covid-19 warrior placing her personal safety and comfort second only to her commitment to public duty.”
Meanwhile, in wake of a surge in Covid-19 case in the district, deputy commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha on Monday directed health officials to conduct a minimum of 300 rapid antigen tests per health block daily. The deputy commissioner, while reviewing the covid situation of Dibrugarh district at a meeting held at the DC office conference hall, also directed officials to carry out rapid antigen test of each and every person coming to health centres with fever and other Covid-related symptoms.
He said that if the health department can carry out 300 tests per health block in a day, there will be a control over the situation as it would result in maximum isolation of Covid-19 patients which in turn will help in lessening the mortality rate. In the meeting, the deputy commissioner also reviewed the case management system of all positive cases and directed health officials to create mechanism to ensure proper monitoring and follow up of home isolation cases.
