DU ex-prof GN Saibaba moves court for ‘emergency parole’

FORMER Delhi University professor G N Saibaba on Thursday moved the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court, seeking “emergency parole” on the grounds of his mother’s death.

Saibaba, convicted by a Gadchiroli court in 2017 for Maoist links, is serving a life sentence in Nagpur’s Central Prison. His 74-year old mother had died of cancer in Hyderabad on August 1.

He had applied for death parole last week to attend her post-funeral rites. This was denied, with authorities saying, “it can’t be granted as he is a different kind of prisoner”.

Saibaba had earlier also sought parole to meet his ailing mother, who had expressed a wish to see her son before her death. That application too was rejected.

Special Public Prosecutor Prashant Sathianathan sought time to reply to the application. The High Court has issued notice to the state government regarding his application, returnable by August 18.

Another person convicted of “Naxal links”, Prashant Rahi, has also sought bail along with suspension of his life sentence, citing the coronavirus outbreak.
