BJP leader Sanjay Khokhar shot dead in Baghpat, police suspect personal enmity

BJP leader and the party’s former chief of Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district Sanjay Khokhar was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Tuesday , police said.

Khokhar, 55, was taking a stroll in his agricultural fields in Baghpat at around 6.30 am when the incident occurred. Baghpat SP Ajay Kumar Singh said, “The body has been sent for post mortem. It seems that the killers were following him since he left his house early Tuesday morning.”

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences over Khokhar’s death and directed police officials to arrest the killers within 24 hours. Acting promptly, UP DGP Hitesh Chandra Awasthi directed the immediate suspension of the in-charge of the Chaprauli police station, Dinesh Chikara, who has been replaced by Sanjay Kumar.

IG (Meerut Zone) Praveen Kumar, who rushed to the spot from Meerut, said, “As per our preliminary investigations, it appears that he has been killed following an enmity… He was struck by bullets on the head and the chest and died on the spot. We have formed five police teams besides the forensic experts to crack the case. We will talk to his family members in detail to find out the motive behind the murder. We will also fix responsibility of the local police in this incident.”

Union Minister of State and Muzaffarnagar MP Sanjeev Balyan, along with a number of BJP leaders reached Khokhar’s residence after the incident. “This is utter neglect by the local police that such a sensational murder could take place…”

Suarjpal Gurjar , the current Baghpat BJP chief, said, “The law and order situation in Baghpat has reached a nadir and it will continue to worsen if immediate corrective measures are not taken. I have also briefed Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma on the phone.”
