VARANASI: An additional chief medical officer, who looked after all arrangements at Covid facilities, lost the battle against the epidemic as he died of infection on Tuesday late night.
More shocking for his family was to know that they had been handed over the body of other Covid victim from Ghazipur district by the Banaras Hindu University hospital’s mortuary.
They became aware of this fact when the other family reached Harishchandra Ghat following beginning of cremation of ACMO.
The ACMO, who held responsibility of ensuring necessary arrangements at Covid facilities at all hospitals in district as well as medical staff quarantine, had fallen ill when he was admitted to a private hospital a week ago. The result of his initial Covid-19 test had come negative two days ago but when his test was conducted again he was found positive, confirmed district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma adding, he had been shifted to BHU hospital’s ICU, where he breathed his last on Tuesday late night.
According to official statement of district administration, the body of another Covid patient from Ghazipur, who died on Wednesday morning, had been kept with the body of ACMO at BHU’s mortuary. As per the Covid protocol both bodies were wrapper packed. When ACMO’s family reached there they were handed over the body of Ghazipur’s patient, whose son is a police inspector.
When ACMO’s family started cremation at Harishchandra Ghat the family of Ghazipur’s patient reached there and apprised them of the fact. ACMO’s family removed the wrapper to see the face of partially burnt body when they also become sure about the mistake committed by BHU mortuary authorities. Later, further rites of cremation of Ghazipur’s patient were completed by his family. ACMO’s family reached BHU mortuary again to take his body for cremation.
