A 22-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter after he fatally shot his girlfriend during a consensual sexual encounter, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Winter Richardson shot Ashleigh Murphy, 26, in the early morning of June 27 inside the recreational vehicle trailer in which they lived at 1869 Fairland Road, off North Tymber Creek Road, near Ormond Beach, according to a report and a press release.

Richardson was arrested Wednesday after an investigation by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office Major Case Unit. He was being held on $10,000 bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail.

Richardson told investigators that Murphy indicated that she wanted him to point a revolver at her during the sexual encounter, the Sheriff’s Office release said. Richardson did, pulling the trigger twice. On the second pull, the gun fired, the bullet hitting Murphy in the shoulder and back, the release said.

“Detectives determined that Murphy’s death was caused by Richardson’s negligence and failure to check the revolver before pointing it at Murphy and pulling the trigger,” the release said.

The shooter reported the incident about 2:40 a.m. June 27.

In a recording of a 9-1-1 call, the caller screamed that Murphy had been shot.

“I did not mean to do this,” the 9-1-1 caller states.

“She asked me to,” the caller goes on to say later. “I didn’t think it was loaded.”
