GIGABYTE and Northern Data AG Agree to Develop HPC Datacenters

August 13, 2020

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Aug. 13, 2020 – GIGABYTE Technology, provider of high-performance servers and workstations, is announcing a partnership with German based Northern Data AG, one of the world’s largest providers of High-Performance Computing (HPC) solutions, to develop distributed computing in Northern Data’s datacenters. These datacenters with GIGABYTE built HPC servers will be located in the Nordics and managed by Northern Data.

GIGABYTE has more than 30 years of engineering expertise and success stories in the development and production of server solutions that cover a myriad of uses from AI servers to GPU dense servers to scientific computing servers and more. The success that GIGABYTE’s servers and workstations have had attributes to the quality and resiliency inherent in the development of manufacturing processes, while also listening to customer needs to produce best-fit solutions.

At Northern Data, a team of AI development and distributed computing experts pride themselves in an architecture of custom software and hardware solutions that is efficient, reliable and powerful using the latest CPU and GPU technologies. Northern Data has proven that their highly efficient mobile containers fit in different, challenging operating environments for datacenters. Northern Data is using the data centers for AI, big data analytics, blockchain applications and more, running on GIGABYTE servers with Northern Data proprietary software to leverage massive parallel processing capabilities of GPU clusters.

In order to build high performance datacenters for the future, Northern Data and GIGABYTE will work hand in hand on HPC systems that are benchmarked against strict criteria and purposed for a wide range of end use cases. GIGABYTE will supply all key components and build the systems for Northern Data, who will be conducting performance tests to ensure that the systems meet Northern Data’s technical requirements. Once the systems are deployed at Northern Data’s data centers, they will be handling workloads in Virtual Machines (VM) for AI and 3D applications, among other workloads such as game streaming. To better fully utilize the datacenter servers when compute demand is on a reduced level, such as during off-peak hours, the distributed computing architecture will provide flexible context switching, which in turn allocates server resources to blockchain applications. This approach prevents the server systems from sitting underutilized and enables them to increase return on investment.

Aroosh Thillainathan, CEO of Northern Data AG, says: “The demand for HPC is booming; the rendering and AI sectors are enormous growth markets. We are pleased to have GIGABYTE technology on board as our development partner to drive forward those kinds of HPC applications that go far beyond blockchain. We have already worked together on various GPU-based HPC projects, as we believe GIGABYTE’s servers are among the best hardware for HPC in the world.”

Thomas Yen, Sales and BDM at GIGABYTE Technology goes on to say: “We are pleased to now officially announce our partnership with Northern Data. We see great potential in our jointly designed GPU clusters. We are excited to work closely with Northern Data as a strategic partner and high-potential customer in the field of HPC.”
