The top college football recruit in the Class of 2022 said Friday that he's staying in his home state — the Longhorn State.

Quinn Ewers, a quarterback from Southlake Carroll High, announced on Twitter that he had committed to Tom Herman's program at Texas.

Ewers told 247Sports.com that his decision was years in the making.

"To be honest I kind of always knew in the back of my head," he told 247Sports. "I always had been a Longhorn fan since I was a little kid. I have pictures of me in their jerseys when I was still in daycare. Me and my family prayed about it and talked about it a lot and came up with the decision." Ohio State and Oklahoma were also high on Ewers' list of potential schools, 247Sports noted.

Ewers is the top-rated pro-style quarterback in the 2022 class, according to 247Sports' ranking. His arm strength is not in question, as the video below shows:

Current Longhorns starter Sam Ehlinger welcomed the newcomer to the UT "family."

The competition to succeed Ehlinger, a senior, will begin in earnest after the 2020 season. Hudson Card, Ja'Quinden Jackson, Casey Thompson and Ben Ballard are on the current roster, and the Longhorns have received a commitment from 2021 quarterback Jalen Milroe. Ewers will be looming over that group.

Southlake Carroll has produced two NFL quarterbacks, per Pro Football Reference: Chase Daniel and Greg McElroy.
