Thomas Muller has added insult to injury for Barcelona by claiming Bayern Munich's 8-2 win over them was better than Germany's 7-1 thumping of Brazil in 2014.

The Bayern and Germany striker played in both and scored the opening goal in both humiliating defeats of the opposition.

His latest performance in Friday's Champions League quarter-final earned him the Man of the Match award as he finished the night on a brace as Barcelona crashed out emphatically.

And Muller twisted the knife into the Spanish giants further by comparing the rout with the drubbing handed out to Brazil in the World Cup six years ago.

"In 2014 against Brazil we never had the same control of the game," Muller said after the match.

"It was something that happened but let's not talk about it, let's talk about today. It was a special night, the result and the way we played was special.

"The best thing was to see that the players who come from substitutes have the same attitude and the same joy.

"The important thing is to do what we want on the pitch and for everyone to go to the limit."

Bayern found themselves 4-1 up after just 31 minutes after Muller bagged his second to bookend strikes from Ivan Perisic and Serge Gnabry.

Barcelona's only reply had come from a David Alaba own goal when the defender comically looped the ball over his own keeper inadvertently.

With a place in the last four at stake, Barca needed a miracle comeback, and halved the deficit before the hour mark through Luis Suarez.

But that tiny glimmer of hope soon washed away as Joshua Kimmich restored the three-goal cushion before the night went from bad to worse for their La Liga counterparts.

Bayern star Philippe Coutinho - on loan from Barcelona - entered the fray from the bench with 10 minutes remaining and played a hand in three more goals.

First the Brazilian set up Robert Lewandowski for the sixth before adding two more of his own to rubber stamp the mauling.

A tasty clash with Man City or Lyon awaits Bayern in the next round, but Muller has already warned his teammates against complacency.

"This is good, you can imagine how it feels, it was very special for us after this match. But we have to recover," he added.

"It's a big statement but the next game, it starts 0-0. It doesn't matter.

"I know the other teams watch our games and we have to win the next game to reach the final. We have to be quiet, calm, relaxed and very happy."
