BENGALURU:
The Railway Protection Force’s Bengaluru division has set up a
cybercrime cell to detect online crime and fraud cases pertaining to the railways.
In 2018, the railway board decided to have a dedicated cell and cities like Pune and Bhubaneswar already set it up to check illegal e-ticketing and social media frauds.
Ashok Kumar Verma, divisional railway manager (Bengaluru), inaugurated the facility at the renovated RPF office on Saturday.
“This is South Western Railway’s first cybercrime cell. We are planning to train our staff as well as recruit consultants. A dedicated team will look into the cases, including e-ticketing frauds and thefts. We are also planning to integrate it with the proposed integrated command centre,” said Debasmita Chattopadhyay Banerjee, senior divisional security commissioner at the RPF’s Bengaluru division.
Till now, RPF would depend on state police for cyber frauds. The CBI had earlier nabbed a railway staffer for running an unauthorised IRCTC ticket racket with the help of travel agents.
