KOLKATA: Widespread violence was reported in Khanakul area of Arambagh in Hooghly district on Saturday following clash between Trinamool and BJP supporters, which led to the death of a BJP worker. BJP has given a bandh call in khanakul area on Sunday to protest violence created by Trinamool.
The BJP worker was attacked with a sharp weapon while hoisting flag as the workers of both parties clashed.
BJP workers claimed that Trinamool men attacked them without any reason and killed Sudip Prananik.
Soon after the news of the killing spread, the BJP workers went on ransacking Trinamool party office and damaged a martyrs column. Then the BJP workers set on fire a wooden bridge, which connects Khanakul area. Several other houses were also ransacked and set ablaze. A strong police contingent was posted but as the wooden bridge was burnt, they faced difficulty in reaching the spot.
BJP MP Soumitra Khan led a protest sit-in demonstration and demanded a proper probe.
A Trinamool spokesman said the police was probing the murder. It might be a handiwork of BJP infighting, he added.
